Architectural tour of Pihlajamäki
Come along and see the architecture and urban environment of Pihlajamäki, guided by the curators of The Unknown Suburb exhibition, Laura Berger and Panu Savolainen. Guided tour in Finnish.
The Pihlajamäki suburb was in many ways a pioneer in Finnish suburban development. It was the first regional development in Finland and also the first suburb to use precast concrete for its apartment buildings. The zoning plan was completed in 1959, with the first buildings following suit in 1960.
The high-rises and long, winding lamellar houses set amidst the natural forms were inspired by functionalist environmental planning. The residential architecture of Pihlajamäki is of a high standard, and the area is currently highly valued. It is also the first suburb in Finland to be protected in a detailed plan (2007).
The event is part of The Unknown Suburb exhibition programme, and the tour is free of charge. No advance registration required. Everyone is welcome to participate!
Start of the tour: In front of Pihlajamäki Church, Liusketie 1
