Suitcase of memories

A Suitcase of Memories is a tool developed by the Helsinki City Museum that can be borrowed by users such as seniors’ centres, senior citizens’ service centres, school classes and pre-school groups. The suitcase contains old objects that can be used to spend time remembering the past.

The service is provided free of charge, and the borrower is responsible for picking up the suitcase and returning it. The borrowing time is 1–4 weeks.

There are currently eight suitcases available: Four life-cycle suitcases that contain objects from different areas of the lives of women and men, as well as four theme suitcases:

  • a beauty suitcase, with objects related to beauty care, particularly from the 1950s
  • a childhood suitcase, which takes one on a nostalgic trip to the everyday life, fun and games of childhood in Helsinki
  • a school suitcase comprised of two parts: a pupil’s holdall and the teacher’s briefcase, with objects from different time periods
  • a Somali suitcase with both Somali and Finnish objects from the past as well as modern articles of daily use
